Endogenous Intermediation in a Model of Search

چکیده

This paper develops a minimal model of an economy with intermediation. The focus is on the endogenous choice of homogeneous agents between specializing as producers or as merchants. Merchants operate alongside a decentralized search market and provide immediacy in exchange. Endogenous choice requires that agents be free to move between the two occupations at any time. Using only this condition, we characterize the equilibria in which merchants are active, and investigate the welfare properties of such equilibria. ∗Kunal Sengupta provided various insights and suggestions. We also thank Guillaume Rocheteau and Andrew Wait for comments on an earlier draft.

A Dynamic Model of Search and Intermediation

This paper develops a dynamic model of an economy with search frictions in which homogeneous agents choose between specializing as producers or as merchants, and can change occupation at any time. Merchants operate alongside a decentralized search market and provide immediacy in trade in return for a price. Agents who know the location of a merchant have the option of paying the merchant’s pric...

We characterize equilibria in symmetric Markov strategies, and derive conditions under which merchants and ...

Long-term and Short-term Effects of Financial Intermediation on Economic Growth

Financial intermediation in Iran's banking system is negatively affected at least in two ways. First, there are many similarities between financial intermediation and usurious activities in the common interpretation of interest-free banking law. This encourages the banks to participate in various commercial activities. Second, the price setting policies of the central bank makes investment more...

Financial Intermediation Chains in an OTC Market∗

More and more layers of intermediaries arise in modern financial markets. What determines this chain of intermediation? What are the consequences? We analyze these questions in a stylized search model with an endogenous intermediary sector and intermediation chains. We show that the chain length and the price dispersion among inter-dealer trades are decreasing in search cost, search speed, and ...

Matching, Search, and Intermediation with Two-Sided Heterogeneity

This paper analyzes the role played by intermediation in a decentralized market, where trade is carried out through bilateral bargaining, and where the bargaining outcomes depend on the process of search for suitable trading partners. To this purpose, ...rst a model of random matching and twosided search with heterogeneous agents is developed. The characterization of pure search equilibria is p...
